Nicosia, 18/2/2025
The Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation is set to reopen its doors on Tuesday, March 11, marking a significant moment for Nicosia’s rich cultural and historical landscape. Following an extensive renovation and curatorial enhancement, the museum now offers a modern, immersive experience for visitors eager to explore Cyprus’ Byzantine heritage.
The Nicosia Tourism Board (NTB) proudly supports this milestone, recognizing the Byzantine Museum as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural identity. As part of our ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting Nicosia’s heritage, we collaborate closely with institutions like the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation to enhance cultural tourism and make history more accessible to all.
A New Museum Experience
With a reimagined exhibition approach, the museum now presents its collections chronologically, covering the 4th to the 18th century. This allows visitors to trace the artistic and religious evolution of Byzantine Cyprus, while thematic sections highlight iconographic traditions and the works of renowned painters.
To further enrich the visitor experience, the museum now features: ✔ Comprehensive digital enhancements, including exhibit descriptions via QR codes and interactive displays. ✔ A state-of-the-art digital museum, allowing in-depth exploration of UNESCO-listed monuments, historic churches, and repatriated treasures. ✔ VR technology, enabling immersive visits to significant religious and cultural sites. ✔ 3D holographic projections, offering a dynamic visual representation of key artifacts. ✔ A modern museum shop και secure storage facilities for visitor convenience.

Supporting Cultural Tourism in Nicosia
As part of NTB’s strategy to elevate Nicosia as a premier cultural destination, we actively support initiatives that preserve and promote the city’s history. The reopening of the Byzantine Museum aligns perfectly with our efforts to enhance museum experiences, attract more visitors, and celebrate our city’s unique heritage.
“Nicosia is home to some of the most significant Byzantine treasures in the region, and the newly upgraded Byzantine Museum ensures that these treasures are presented in a way that is both engaging and educational,” said President of Nicosia Tourism Board Mr. Theodoros Kringou “This initiative reinforces our vision to position Nicosia as a top destination for cultural tourism.”
